Nine Stories, JD Salinger

This collection of short stories is interesting in the sense that they feel incredibly personal and honest, as with all of his published works. Salinger's dialogue is so natural, it's like you're eavesdropping on real conversations. He tackles some heavy themes like mental health, the aftermath of war (Salinger was a soldier in WWII), and a hint of sexual undercurrents, but he does it with a sense of humor that pops up unexpectedly. Stories like "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and "For Esmé – with Love and Squalor" are particularly haunting and memorable.

What's great about Salinger is how he explores the line between genius and madness. His characters see the world in unique ways, leaving you wondering if they're brilliant or a bit off. It's not always easy reading, but it's definitely worth it if you can take your time. This is not a summer read. Salinger makes you work for it, and that's part of the charm.
