There, There. Tommy Orange

Been hearing a lot about this novel so when it finally became available in the library, I jumped on it. Each chapter is a character study of life as an urban Native American Indian. Eye opening and profound. It’s heartbreaking to think how our past ancestors treated a culture, and even today, how in this multifaceted and upsetting history, American Indians are still paying the price for lands being taken by settlers and the US government. It dives deep into each character, there are twelve in all, through their trials and tribulations, as they all head from different parts of the country to the Oakland Powwow. His voice is something I haven’t read before, and for a debut novel, I am anxious to read what the young writer has in store for us in the future.
